Is my hair just right, my outfit acceptable? Am I using the right language, and am I up-to-date with what is happening on all of my feeds? Can my parent just stop bugging me? Except for the feeds part, my life was rife with the same questions. When I look at my teen aged children, and I think of my own teen aged years, it is a period fraught with self-obsession, insecurity and a push for independence. Each of these social media applications has their uses, but it is when we fail to understand or appreciate their purpose that we can get in over our heads, or attract unwanted attention and even danger. The same has happened with my understanding of Facebook and Instagram. I’ve been using Twitter since June, 2015, and it has been in these past few months that I am beginning to fully understand this social media application, its beneficial uses and its potential and obvious abuses. The trouble with this philosophy is that it is difficult to adopt it to an environment about which all of us know so little. If I was to give in and finally get a tattoo to celebrate my post half century of living, it would be the above and done in Greek.
